Any plans offered by CARCHEX are not extended warranties, but are often referred to by consumers as such. CARCHEX vehicle service contracts (also called “protection plans”) operate similarly to extended warranties and provide repair coverage for mechanical breakdowns after factory warranties expire.

Buying a Honda certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle is usually a safe bet, as Hondas are known for durability and reliability. However, breakdowns are always a reality. A vehicle protection plan can protect your investment and keep your car active for years to come.

At CARCHEX, we offer affordable and comprehensive protection plans on new, used, or certified pre-owned Honda vehicles. In this article, we’ll explain what the manufacturer’s Honda CPO warranty covers, how to get the best protection for your Honda at the lowest price, and why extended coverage from CARCHEX is a reliable option.

Honda CPO Quick Facts

  • Powertrain Coverage:  7 years or 100,000 miles
  • Non-Powertrain Coverage: 2 additional years or 100,000 miles
  • Coverage Start Date: Original in-service date or when New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires
  • Exclusions: Standard maintenance, wearandtear items, body parts, interior, trim, glass, emission system
  • Transferability: Yes, remaining warranty balance is transferable

Honda CPO Warranty Coverage

A certified pre-owned vehicle is a used car that’s been inspected and refurbished. At Honda, the vehicle must be newer than six years, have no more than 80,000 miles, and pass through a Honda pre-owned certified checklist, which includes a 182-point inspection.

Buying a CPO vehicle is usually more affordable than buying a new Honda vehicle. They’re still considered in great condition and come with a Honda CPO factory warranty.

Honda offers limited coverage for certified pre-owned vehicles purchased in 2024 or within the five years before.

Powertrain Limited Warranty Coverage

  • This limited warranty provides powertrain coverage for up to 7 years (from original in-service date) or up to 100,000 miles (whichever occurs first).
  • It covers powertrain parts like the engine, transmission, and transfer case, as well as the front- and rear-wheel drive system.

Non-Powertrain Coverage

  • This limited warranty provides non-powertrain coverage for an additional 2 years or up to 100,000 miles. Honda’s Non-Powertrain Coverage focuses on the following systems and components:

HONDA CPO NON-POWERTRAIN COVERAGE

Fuel system

Sensors

Air conditioning

Suspension

Batteries

Audio and navigational devices

Steering

Bulbs

Safety restraint system

Brakes

Heating

Fluids

Electrical

Cooling

Lubricants

If the vehicle is bought while the limited warranty is still in effect, the two years officially start after it expires. If it’s already expired, the two years start at the time of purchase.

Honda CPO warranties are transferable for the balance of the 12 months or 12,000 miles on the limited warranty or 7 years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain warranty plan.

What’s Missing from Honda’s CPO Coverage

There are a handful of exclusions with Honda’s warranty plans. Here’s what’s not included in the Honda CPO factory warranty:

Standard Maintenance & Wear Items

Honda’s limited warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, improper maintenance, or damage caused by acts of nature.

The following is not covered under the Honda CPO warranty through the factory:

  • Expendable items such as filters, fluids, wiper blades, etc.
  • Maintenance procedures such as tune-ups, tire rotation, and wheel alignment
  • Clutches, brakes, and tires
  • Batteries and bulbs

Body Parts, Interior, Trim, and Glass

The manufacturer’s warranty does not protect your Honda against any defects to your car’s appearance, including the:

  • Body parts and trim, including inner fenders, doors, and chrome trim
  • Upholstery, trim, and interior parts such as dash panel, head consoles, and more
  • Glass and mirrors
  • Wheels, including wheel studs and trim rings
  • Other items such as airbags that deploy during a collision or clamps, clips, and screws

Emission System

The Honda CPO warranty excludes emissions-related repairs and replacements such as head pipes, catalytic converters, mufflers, and more.

ADDITIONAL LIMITATIONS

  • Vehicles with parts other than Honda Genuine Parts or Accessories aren’t covered, if these parts contributed to the breakdown.
  • Misuse from activities like improper towing, racing, or overloading aren’t covered.
  • You must keep your receipts or records to prove proper routine maintenance.
  • Honda won’t cover normally included parts if the failure was caused by a non-covered part.
  • Cars with modifications, tampering, or aftermarket parts aren’t included.
  • Like most warranties, the Honda CPO doesn’t cover damage from environmental or external causes, such as collision, theft, vandalism, flooding, windstorms, ice, salt, corrosion, rust, etc.
  • Mechanical breakdowns from improper care or negligence aren’t covered.
  • Failing to perform normal maintenance services like oil changes as explained in the owner’s manual will void the warranty.

Why a Vehicle Service Contract Is a Good Choice for Honda CPO Vehicles

A vehicle service contract can protect you from paying expensive out-of-pocket repairs on any car, but especially your CPO Honda. According to RepairPal, Honda owners can expect to pay $428 in annual repair and maintenance costs on their Honda vehicle.

CARCHEX Extended Vehicle Protection Plans for Honda CPO Vehicles

CARCHEX is a third-party auto protection company that offers several levels of vehicle coverage for new and used Honda vehicles, ranging from Titanium (the most expansive coverage) to Powertrain (the most basic plan). That way, you can find the right protection for your CPO Honda—and your budget.

Check out an overview of our Extended Vehicle Protection Plan options:

  • TitaniumThis plan is similar to a factory warranty, with only a short list of items that aren’t covered.
  • PlatinumThis is a high level of stated-component coverage that includes elements of all major vehicle systems.
  • Powertrain PlusLike a traditional powertrain plan, this protects the engine, transmission, and drive axle. It also covers the air conditioning and various electrical components.
  • PowertrainThis is our basic powertrain coverage. It offers protection for key engine components, the transmission, drive axle, and transfer case.
  • Extra CareThe Extra Care plan covers key components that aren’t part of the vehicle’s powertrain, including the electrical system, steering, suspension, and brakes.

Another factor to consider when shopping for extended coverage for your Honda is its age and mileage. Honda vehicles tend to last longer than most brands. The longer you plan on driving your vehicle, the more you can benefit from a third-party auto protection plan. That’s because they often provide longer term limits that protect cars long after your original warranty has expired.
