An extended car warranty is protection from the vehicle manufacturer against mechanical breakdowns. This term is sometimes incorrectly used to describe coverage from third-party providers, which offer similar protection plans called vehicle service contracts. CARCHEX is a vehicle service contract provider.

Ram’s Factory Warranty

Ram’s manufacturer warranty is serviced by Mopar. Warranty terms vary by vehicle model and year, and can be broken down into four parts: basic limited, powertrain limited, corrosion, and federal emission warranties.

Basic Limited Warranty

Ram’s basic limited warranty, otherwise known as a bumper-to-bumper warranty, covers the cost of repair parts and labor due to defectiveness in material, workmanship, or factory preparation. This warranty gets its bumper-to-bumper name because it covers almost all of your vehicle’s parts. The only exclusions to this warranty are tires and unwired headphones.

This warranty typically has two lengths depending on the parts it is covering. Almost all parts are covered for three years/36,000 miles. The following parts are covered for less time at one year/12,000 miles:

  • Brakes
  • Clutch discs/modular disc assembly
  • Wheel alignment and balancing
  • Windshield and rear window
  • Wiper blades
  • Bulbs

If one of the protected parts were to need repair, and you couldn’t get your car to a dealership, Ram offers complimentary towing for up to 10 miles away to a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram dealer.

Powertrain Limited Warranty

Ram’s powertrain warranty lasts five years/60,000 miles and covers the cost of parts and labor for powertrain components, which are the parts that power your vehicle. Ram’s protected parts include:

  • Gasoline engine
  • Transmission
  • Front-wheel drive
  • All-wheel drive
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Four-wheel drive

This part of the warranty has the same towing services as the basic limited warranty, providing complimentary towing to a dealership within 10 miles of the breakdown.

Corrosion Warranty

This warranty protects the sheet metal panels on your car that develop holes or rust from corrosion. However, certain types of surface or cosmetic corrosion are not covered. For example, if corrosion were to occur from driving through ocean spray, that will not be covered because it didn’t cause structural damage to the vehicle.

For outer-body sheet metal panels, you have protection for 60 months with no mileage limit. For the rest of the sheet metal panels, you are protected for 36 months.

Federal Emission Warranty

Federal law requires Ram to offer protection to certain emission parts. These parts are listed in detail in the Ram factory warranty booklet, but depending on the part, it will be covered for either two years/24,000 miles or eight years/80,000 miles.

What Is Not Covered

Just like any factory warranty, Ram has a list of exclusions that aren’t protected under any portion of the warranty.

Ram Warranty Exclusions

Any part that was not on your vehicle when it left the manufacturing plant or is not certified for use in your vehicle

Damage caused by environmental factors, such as floods, hailstorms, and road hazards

Coverage after your vehicle is declared a total loss

Damage caused by racing

Your vehicle’s regular maintenance or damage from not getting regular maintenance

Other damage caused by abuse or neglect of your vehicle

Why Should You Get Extra Coverage for Your Ram?

The Ram factory warranty only protects your car for the first few years of its life when it’s in its best condition. Your vehicle is more likely to need a repair the older it gets, and by that point, your factory warranty will have expired.

This is where an extended warranty or vehicle service plan can help. Depending on how much coverage you select, an extended warranty from Mopar or a vehicle service contract from a third-party provider can provide extensive coverage for most of your truck’s major systems. These contracts can protect your vehicle beyond the factory warranty and for a longer time, which helps you avoid having to pay out of pocket for repairs to your Ram.

Ram’s Reliability

Every year, RepairPal ranks car makes and models based on reliability. Three factors go into the reliability score: the cost of repairs, the frequency of repairs, and the severity of repairs. RepairPal rated Ram 3.0 out of 5.0 for its reliability, which put it 23rd out of 32 car brands, and determined that its yearly average repair cost is $858—the average across all brands is $652.

RepairPal’s information on the Ram vehicles demonstrates that they aren’t immune from repair problems. For this reason, it’s good to consider an extended warranty to protect your vehicle longer. While Mopar®, Ram’s manufacturer, offers extended warranty plans, a vehicle service plan through a third-party company like CARCHEX may allow for more flexibility and affordability.

CARCHEX offers a wide variety of vehicle service contract options that range from extensive multi-system parts coverage to powertrain-only protection. There is a plan for every circumstance, as new, used, or certified pre-owned vehicles can all get coverage. The five levels of protection are outlined below:

  • Titanium: This is our highest level of coverage and protects most vehicle systems and parts, except for a short list of exclusions. Coverage is available for up to 10 years.
  • Platinum: This plan is the most extensive stated-component coverage, meaning the contract lists the covered items instead of the excluded ones. This plan can protect hundreds of components for up to 10 years.
  • Powertrain Plus: This level provides coverage to all of your Ram’s major systems. The Powertrain Plus plan is ideal for older cars with more than 60,000 miles and carries terms of up to 10 years.
  • Powertrain: This is our powertrain plan that covers essential components, such as the engine and transmission. It is available for up to six years.
  • Extra Care: This is designed to enhance existing powertrain coverage and adds protection for parts in select additional systems, including the suspension, steering, and others.
