Alright when do you change brake fluid, when do you flush the brake system? See essentially changing brake fluid and flushing the system is the same there are no chemicals involved here it’s just bleeding all of the old fluid out and replacing it with new. Now, if you know how to bleed the brakes on your car, you can do it yourself, but if you have to ask even the most basic question because we’re dealing with brakes here, well you have to take it to a shop where they are fully versed in it. But even there you have to make sure that you stipulate that they use the proper brake fluid for your car.
There are three different types: Dot 3, Dot 4, and Dot 5. Forget the Dot 5 because it isn’t used in anything that is driven on the road. Dot 3, Dot 4, your owner’s manual will tell you which is required for your car. Do the brake flush every two year religiously because brake fluid absorbs and attracts moisture and when the moisture builds up, well that’s what damages expensive electronic parts like the ABS pump and things like that. Also, too much moisture can mean the car is dangerous during a panic stop. Two years, forget the miles, every two years flush the brake system.
